Angels v Leona in chart race
Shropshire teenager Melanie Nakhla will take on X Factor winner Leona Lewis in the race for a Christmas number one as classical sensations All Angels release their debut single today.
Melanie, 17, is one quarter of the high-flying foursome, who last month broke the record for the fastest selling album by a classical act - subsequently broken by the Fron Choir, which is based near Oswestry.
Today the choir girls release their bid for the Christmas top spot - a cover version of the Robbie Williams classic Angels.
They will face stiff competition from Leona, who was crowned the first female winner of the ITV1 talent show on Saturday and has a £1 million record deal prize to look forward to.
One million advance orders of her debut track A Moment Like This have been recorded, and 50,000 copies of the download were sold within 30 minutes of going on sale at midnight.
The CD version will be available in shops on Wednesday when it is expected thousands of fans will rush out to buy copies.
Leona, 21, said: “I’m just shocked. It’s unbelievable. I feel like my dream has come true, the dream I’ve been dreaming since a little girl has come true.”
The All Angels single is being released in partnership with the Royal British Legion, raising money for the annual Poppy Appeal. A minimum contribution of 55p from every copy of the single sold will be donated to the charity.
And Melanie will face another challenge today, when she appears on a festive edition of Ready Steady Cook at 4.30pm.
She will battle it out with her fellow band member Charlotte Ritchie to cook the best dish.
On Wednesday, All Angels will appear in Shrewsbury at the town’s Carols in the Square.
