U.K. National Youth Music Theatre Presents "Pendragon"
The U.K. National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) performed its production of "Pendragon" April 13, 14 and 15 at the Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Hall. To date the NYMT, which is composed of youth selected through a highly rigorous audition process, has produced a number of world-renowned artists. These include Jude Law, who stars in the movie Enemy at the Gates, and Jamie Bell, the protagonist of the film Billy Elliot.
"Pendragon," a musical based on the English legend of King Arthur, explores the adventures of the young King Arthur as he confronts his destiny in growing up. The audience was thoroughly captivated by the energetic performances of cast members, who are all in their teens.
The performance on the 14th was attended by many guests, including the British Ambassador to Japan Sir Stephen Gomersall, members of the British Council, and prominent figures in the music world. The impassioned performances by these young artists of the new generation was welcomed with wholehearted applause.
Speaking a reception held following the show, Sir Stephen praised the performers, saying, "The existence of such a company is one of the reasons why British theatre and music continues to be so strong and vibrant." He also highly commended Min-On's effort to promote popular music and culture exchange.
During the reception, performers gave an impromptu performance in Japanese of the song "Sakura Sakura." The NYMT members returned to the U.K. following the successful completion of their seven- performance tour.
