County teenager’s capital gig
A new girlband featuring a Shropshire teenager launched their debut single today with a gig in London’s shopping district in a bid for the number one spot in the first schools singles chart.
Classical sensations All Angels performed Songbird - their cover of the famous Fleetwood Mac hit about the power of love also popularised by Eva Cassidy - at music store HMV in Oxford Street.
Seventeen-year-old Melanie Nakhla, from Shrewsbury, and her band mates were joined by ex-Busted star Matt Willis who also took to the stage at the My Music gig for the start of National Music Week.
The initiative aims to encourage young people to get more involved in listening to and playing music.
All Angels are one of several upcoming British acts who have each produced a track which will be available as a CD single and as a download free of charge to children in participating schools.
The Schools Top 10 is a major part of the project, the results of which will be revealed on October 31. Other shortlisted artists include Betty Curse, Keisha White, Lil’ Chris, Mr Skillz, Natasha Marsh, Seth Lakeman, Soweto Kinch and Trinity Stone.
All Angels are being heralded as the world’s first classical girlband, rivalling the likes of G4 and Il Divo.
Ahead of the gig, Melanie said she hoped the band’s first public performance would be a hit.
“We just want to show people how classical music is accessible to everyone and that it is possible to mix genres - classical and contemporary music - and that there is nothing wrong with that,” she said.
Songbird officially goes on general release on November 6.
