Classical girl group All Angels tell Funday about their heavenly success
Simon Button
Tis the season to release an album if you're a vocal group, and All Angels are no exception. Funday meets the teenage classical girl band that includes a pilot, an actress, a singer and a sportswoman
Funday: How did you all get together?
Charlotte Ritchie: Our manager went around the country looking for young girl singers. We all had to audition and Melanie, Laura, Daisy and I were all picked to be in the band.
Funday: How did you come up with the name All Angels?
Daisy Chute: The idea was to have a name that sounded young and classy. Angel Voices was one idea but then we found out there is an album called that, and another idea was Gift. All Angels was the one we all liked best.
Funday: Are you still studying for A-levels?
Charlotte Ritchie: Yes we are, which means when we're not performing, we are reading books and doing homework. All of us are determined to work hard and finish our exams.
Funday: When did you find time to make an album?
Melanie Nakhla: We made it during the school holidays in summer. It was hard work but we became good friends quickly so it was also a lot of fun hanging out together.
Funday: How did you feel when the album went into the top 10?
Melanie Nakhla: We were all in a car when we heard the news and we all started screaming. Because the top 10 is usually rock and pop music we were thrilled to do so well with a classical album.
Funday: How do you fill the time when you're travelling?
Melanie Nakhla: If we're not doing homework, we sing a lot of Disney songs.
Funday: What do your classmates think of your success?
Charlotte Ritchie: They haven't treated me any differently. All my friends are cool and many of them have bought the album.
Laura Wright: I thought some might be jealous, but they're not into music so it's not a job they'd want to do anyway.
Funday: Are you worried about competition from the other classical vocal groups around at the moment?
Charlotte Ritchie: Not really because most of them are older than us and we're the only group of four girls. Plus our music is a mix of modern music and classical.
Laura Wright: The fact there are other classical groups out there just means we have to work harder.
Funday: What's been the highlight so far?
Daisy Chute: Singing at the Royal Albert Hall in London during the Festival of Remembrance. But it's all been great and every day is so exciting.
Melanie Nakhla: The fact our album is a hit is also brilliant. We've shown young people that classical music can be cool, not boring.
