Music Week has just published an interesting report on classical album downloads and included is a table of the top 10 classical downloads of 2006. Here it is:
I think this is such good news that I've decided to start a separate thread for it. There is no link as this article and chart is in the paper Music Week magazine this week, maybe I'll be able to do a scan of it later.
This confirms what I've been seeing at iTunes ever since All Angels was released, they have consistently outsold everything else 'classical' in their charts - but I don't know why! Any ideas?
I think it's remarkable that All Angels came so far in front of Katherine - and the Fron Choir who aren't even in the top 10. It is even more remarkable that some core classical albums are well up in the chart battling it out with the big name classical crossover singers!
Anyway, although digital album sales are still fairly small compared to CDs, they are becoming increasingly important and it's good to see All Angels at the forefront of the digital revolution.
The article also mentions that Universal Classics and Jazz will tomorrow be announcing the setting up of their own classical download store for their artists - which include All Angels, Hayley and Katherine.
Possibly even more exciting is the prediction (in the article) that UCJ may have to abandon the Digital Rights Management (DRM) model - copy protection - in order to break the iTunes monopoly. And that - if it were to happen - would be the best thing to happen to digital (classical?) music since it started! ;D
Meanwhile, Three cheers for All Angels
