Thanks Dave but that raises a further question. If Hayley and the Choirboys were awarded Gold on the Friday of Week 1, and All Angels has sold faster than either of them, how come All Angels didn't go Gold at some point last week? As of last night, they were only about a third of the way there. Did I miss something? Roger

Very interesting and fascinating information, Dave. Thank you for that. WELL DONE GIRLS and thank you for proving our faith in you. That's why those who are here from HWI are here! We backed Hayley right from the start (Many stalwart OTHERS, I hasten to add before I joined the gang) and felt that if anyone was going to come close to Hayley we reckoned you had what it takes. You have. Jolly well done! And its great meeting with you all. Peter S.

Hi Roger, Nice article but grrr!!!!! They list classical singers who never held the record that All Angels broke (Russell and Katherine never broke it!) and ignore the most recent holders of the record (Hayley Westenra and The Choirboys). Don't you just love to hate journalists? Now, Gold and Platinum discs! These are awarded on Fridays each week and are based on how many albums have been shipped by the record company, not how many were sold in the shops. The difference when an album is first released is considerable. They also have to be applied for by the record company and audited by the BPI before the awards are made. So having a Gold disc in week one depends on the shops preordering enough copies then on the record company getting their act together in time - which they can often do the week before as they would know how many were ordered and shipped. I'm not sure which problem it was for All Angels but my guess is not enough preorders from the shops (100,000 needed). We have several reports (including from me) of stock outages in the shops - also several had them placed rather low in their week 1 in-house charts especially HMV and Woolworths (no. 19) so they would have initially preordered too few CDs - until they sold out. This would also have hit the first week chart position - shops can't sell what they haven't got. All very annoying. Let's hope the shops decide to catch up this week and that it isn't too late (people who wanted AA and couldn't get it may have bought Angelis or Katherine instead). Cheers, Dave

One would hope that, if the record companies failed to apply for the gold disc, that the artists (or their managers) might give them a nudge. I'm sure UCJ would prefer a light bruise than a slipped disc! Roger

Just checking the charts in Tesco.com I see that All Angels are sitting at No. 15. More interesting perhaps is the fact that they have no stocks. In the top 36 all CDs are on "Dispatched within 1 working day" with the exception of All Angels (3-5 days) and The Fron Male Voice Choir, also from UCJ, (dispatched within 14 days).
Who got the sums wrong, was it Tescos or UCJ?

I was livid when i saw what low-ish positions they had them in last week "in house" and those low positions meant they'd ordered low stocks. I think Asda and Sainsburys got it about right so good for them. Cheers, Dave

UCJ appear happy with results to date as this has just appeared on www.allangelsofficial.com news All Angels have broken all records with the fastest-selling debut album by a classical act in the history of the UK charts. The girls entered the chart at Number 9 yesterday with a staggering 33,000 sales in just one week, which is more than many other classical names including Charlotte Church, Russell Watson and even Luciano Pavarotti!
Bill Holland, MD of Universal Classics and Jazz says: 'All Angels are the real deal. They are champagne in a world of coca-cola'. Plus the girls say 'to have a major record deal is fantastic, but to do so well in the charts is beyond all our expectations!'
Congratulation Charlotte, Daisy, Laura and Melanie! Tut, tut. No mention of HDW.

Hello Dave, Drew and everybody! It would appear that many of these news reports are taken from the same source, probably a press release. I've just noticed that the articles from Virgin and the Shropshire Star have an identical paragraph in addition to the girls' statement! ;D Best Wishes, Richard

Hi Drew,
I think the reason they did not mention Hayley is that they were knocking the competition, as Hayley is with UCJ it would be a bit of an own goal to knock Hayley!
I might be wrong of course, but that is how I see it.
Cheers

Hello again everybody! It will be very interesting to see what happens in the charts next week, because Mark Goodyer is playing All Angels on Radio 2 at about 6:20am, immediately after Pause for Thought. Yesterday he played Songbird, and this morning it was the Flower Duet. I'll be listening again tomorrow. Best Wishes, Richard
